Man charged in the death of a La Crosse woman in June

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A La Crosse man is charged Thursday with first degree intentional homicide in the death of Erin Somvilai back in June.

Erik Sackett appeared in court for the first time at the La Crosse County Courthouse Thursday.

Somvilai was reported missing on June 4 and was found dead in Runge Hollow Lake in Vernon County tied down by concrete blocks two weeks later.

She was found near a cabin that belongs to Sackett's family.

Autopsy reports indicated that Somvilai died due to homicidal violence.

According to the criminal complaint, a K-9 search detected the odor of human remains on Somvilai's bed and in Sackett's truck.

It goes on to say Sackett had a relationship with Somvilai, as well as another woman.

Investigators say his motive to kill Somvilai was to conceal that relationship from his parole officer from a prior offense.

Sackett is being held at the La Crosse County Courthouse on a $1 million cash bond.

If convicted, he faces life in prison.
