EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU)-- For the second straight year, WEAU 13 News is partnering with the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation to honor one educator from all 20 public schools in the district with a Golden Apple Award.
At Manz Elementary school, principal Heather Grant awarded Kindergarten teacher Heather Hernandez with the Golden Apple.
"The Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation has picked one teacher from every school to be named the Golden Apple teacher of the year and Mrs. Hernandez is the teacher for Manz," says Grant.
Hernandez says the school is trying to be more efficient in implementing a cross-cultural means of communication.
By adding Hmong and Spanish to the curriculum, Manz is being more responsive to all the families in the school.
"The goal in providing bilingual and exposure to other cultures, countries, languages is to let kids know that there's something different and in our world right now that's so important. We talk about acceptance and that being different is what makes us special, another of those lifelong lessons that hopefully will instill a little bit in their hearts as they go through our world," says Hernandez.
Grant adds, "I think about the Gandhi quote of 'being the change you want to see in the world.' And Heather truly lives that every single day, not only does she believe that diversity is important in our school but she's been living that in our school."
Hernandez and Manz Elementary school will receive a $1,000 grant from the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation. And Heather will get to use $500 to use in her classroom.
