The results are in for this year's Food for Fines campaign conducted by the Menomonie Police Department. From Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, citizens can help pay off basic parking fines through food pantry donations -- canned food and other packaged items -- by dropping them off at the MPD office during business hours to receive $2 off for each item donated.

Here's the tally for the 2018 campaign:

* Number of items: 1,370

* Pounds of food: 1,098

* Number of tickets paid: 219

Compared to last year, the overall poundage is slightly down but there were actually 57 more items donated this year, including lots of ramen, noodles and other lightweight items. Seen here delivering the last load of donations on Jan. 2 is DJ Walker, a Menomonie High School senior who is spending his afternoons at MPD working as an intern. After he graduates, DJ will be attending UW-Stout to major in its criminal justice program.
