The name of the officer involved in a deadly shooting at an area Walmart has been released.

According to Lake Hallie Police Chief, Cal Smokowicz, the officer involved was 40-year-old Adam Meyers. Smokowicz says Officer Meyers was first employed in Lake Hallie back in October of 2008.

The victim was Melissa Abbott, 25 originally from Black River Falls.

The deadly shooting happened at the Lake Hallie Walmart last Friday around 5:15 p.m. According to police, officers were dispatched after reports of Abbott being disorderly and having a knife.

Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said Abbott was a resident at the Northern Wisconsin Center in Chippewa Falls and was accompanied at the store by two workers from the center.

According to the Northern Wisconsin Center's website, the center is a "state operated intermediate care facility for persons with intellectual disabilities."

In a release, police say “Given the close proximity of other citizens and dangerous and threatening behavior of the subject Officer Meyers believed he had no other choice than to use deadly force.”

The shooting is being investigated by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.
