VERNON COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- A new scam going around Vernon County is targeting grandparents.

According to the deputies at the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, the phone scammers claim they are their grandchild or a police officer. The scammers then say their grandchild has been arrested in Florida and they need money to get out of jail. The scammers reportedly ask the grandparents to purchase two Target gift cards and call back with the card number.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s office, with the assistance of the Regional Target Loss Prevention Office, was able to obtain receipts and video images of two suspects making purchases on the gift cards at two different stores in California. The department is working with agencies in California and the FBI to identify the suspects involved.

Deputies are reminding people to not respond or provide personal information from unsolicited phone calls, unless you are sure it is legitimate.
