New restroom facility soon coming to Altoona's River Prairie Park

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- As Altoona city officials continue working to improve and maintain River Prairie Park, one of the current focuses is giving visitors more options when it comes to restroom facilities.

The city plans to construct a bathroom and maintenance facility in River Prairie to support activities at the park. The city of Altoona presented a bid in the spring to begin a financial plan for the project.

"We went out to bid and came in over budget so council drafted staff to work with architect to redesign it, to value engineer it," said Mike Golat, City Administrator. The city council recently approved a finance increase to get the project rolling. Golat says the council approved a financial increase from $500,000 to about 800,000 for the project.

The city says they've received a lot of community feedback regarding the need for a restroom facility at the park, especially because the summer season has attracted more visitors. "At the beginning of the summer, we didn't have any portable restroom facilities out there and then we got the portable ones,” said Golat. However he says the need for a more permanent option is increasing.

The new restroom facility will include six women's and six men's toilets, along with a family restroom facility and outdoor rinse off shower for people using the splash pad. "They already told us to move forward last time we talked about it but we're just kind of checking in with the final design," said Golat.

With the additional funds needed for the project approved, a final redesign plan will be presented the city council during a meeting Thursday.

City officials expect construction for the new facility to begin this fall and say it should be complete by June of 2019.
