EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Eau Claire’s State Street is scheduled to undergo its biggest road project in 2019, which includes adding new roundabouts, bike lanes, and bigger sidewalks.
Eau Claire’s City Engineer, Dave Solberg, said pedestrian safety was concern among the public and is what prompted the project plans.
The city has drafted up some early street designs, exploring roundabouts at Lexington Blvd., Roosevelt Ave., MacArthur Ave. and Hamilton Ave. in the Putnam Heights neighborhood.
“I feel like that is going to be huge for student safety because it will limit the amount of contact that could be possible for cars to have with pedestrians,” said UWEC student Paul Wilfahrt.
“We want to hopefully have a product that is very well received and everybody whether they're walking or driving through it, crossing it,” said Solberg.
Solberg said the city will unveil the plans for the roundabouts to the public on Thursday.
If all goes in favor of the plans, construction is expected to begin next summer and be completed by November 2019.
