UPDATE: Oliver out as athletic director for Altoona School District

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- WEAU 13 News has learned James Oliver is no longer the athletic director for the Altoona School District.

Altoona School board president Robin Elvig (right) talks to those in attendance during Monday night's board meeting. She is announcing that James Oliver (left) will will stay on as a dean of students and will be working more closely with school administration, but would not confirm to WEAU 13 News if Oliver is staying on as the high school’s athletic director. Superintendent Connie Biedron (center) listens to the announcement.

As we reported earlier this week, Oliver will stay on with the school district as dean of students for the rest of this school year, but he will not continue as athletic director.

The board made the decision during a closed session meeting October 2. The board also held a special meeting on September 28.

Oliver previously removed himself from duties as the football athletic director for the remainder of this season, saying he "had no authority to fire head football coach Steve English."

Superintendent Connie Biedron said the school district can't share specifics about the personnel matter, but she did say Altoona High School Principal Jason LeMay will serve as interim athletic director until a replacement is hired.

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- Another marathon-long closed session took place for the Altoona School Board on Monday night, regarding the status of athletic director James Oliver.

The issue surrounding Oliver was his self-removal from duties as the football athletic director for the remainder of this season, saying he "had no authority to fire head football coach Steve English." A letter from Superintendent Connie Biedron said English was "in place as before and they look forward to the rest of the season.

Last week, the board held a closed session meeting for 4-1/2 hours, but after it wrapped up, there was no clarity about what was discussed. Tonight, after another long closed session, lasting more than two hours, some answers did surface.

The school board decided Oliver will stay on as a dean of students and will be working more closely with school administration, but board president Robin Elvig would not confirm if Oliver is staying on as the high school’s athletic director.

"Part of that is they are hearing stuff that's from all over the place right now. So, they're not hearing it from us, because this has been a personnel issue. State statute,” Altoona School Board President Robin Elvig said to WEAU 13 News on Monday after the meeting concluded. “I know it may seem like we're not being transparent, but it is truly a state law. It is a personnel issue. It would damage Jamie if we were to talk about this out in the open."

WEAU did ask for comment from Oliver after the meeting, but he refused. Elvig said the decision of the board was unanimous and, as far as the board is concerned, considers the matter closed.
