Relative identifies 3 of 5 killed in Chippewa County

LAKE HALLIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The father of two of five people found dead in two houses in northwestern Wisconsin has identified two sons and a grandson as among the dead.

Authorities say a man shot and killed four people and wounded two others at a home in Lake Hallie on Sunday night and a home in the town of Lafayette on Monday.

Ritchie German Sr. of North Prairie, Wisconsin says adult sons Ritchie German Jr. and Douglas German were among the dead, along with Douglas' 8-year-old son, Calvin German.

The elder German says authorities have told him they suspect Ritchie Jr. was the killer.

Ritchie German Jr. and another person were found dead and two others wounded Sunday night at the Lake Hallie residence. Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk says deputies found a man, woman and the boy dead at the Lafayette home.

Authorities have not released identities or motive.

LAKE HALLIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Two Chippewa County neighborhoods try to piece together events which left four people murdered and the suspected gunman dead.

The scenes of the shootings were a home in Lake Hallie, and a home in the Town of Lafayette.

Investigators were at both sites looking for clues into how these murder scenes are connected.

Five people are dead and two others are hurt after a two shootings in Chippewa County.

The Lake Hallie Police Department arrived Sunday night around 10:30 at a home on the 13000 block of 45th Avenue after multiple 911 calls of shots fired inside the home.

"I just heard rapid, boom, boom, boom, boom, we didn't know what it was, we just thought it was some really loud fireworks," said neighbor Carolyn Prochnow.

When officers arrived, they found two adults -- a man and a woman -- dead inside the home.

Police say the man is the suspected gunman.

Two other people inside the home were hurt and taken to the hospital.

Law enforcement agencies believe the Lake Hallie shooting is connected to another shooting in the Town of Lafayette.

Around 2:30 Monday morning, law enforcement officers went to notify family members of one of the people found dead in Lake Hallie.

"At first there were two or three squad cars then a lot more started coming in that's when I thought okay what's going on here," said a neighbor.

Then, another discovery.

"There was no answer at the residence we did gain access and at the residence we found three more victims that were victims of a gunshot," said the sheriff.

Sheriff Kowalczyk says one man, one woman and a boy were the victims in the Town of Lafayette home.

"This has always been like a super quiet neighborhood everyone keeps to themselves but everyone knows each other on a first name basis," said a neighbor.

Kowalczyk says the same shooter is suspected in the deaths at both crime scenes in Lake Hallie and Lafayette.

"This is an ongoing active investigation the department of criminal investigation, the sheriff's department, the Lake Hallie Police Department, coroner's office are all involved in this so slowly but surely we are piecing this together," he said.

The Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday night. EMS and law enforcement responded because of the nature of the shooting, in which two were deceased.

According to Chippewa County Sheriff, James Kowalczyk, says the Sheriff’s Department went to the town of Lafayette to notify the family members of one of the victims. There was no answer and officials gained access where they found three more gunshot victims.

Kowalczyk says the citizens of Chippewa County are not in harm’s way and anyone with information should contact the Chippewa County Sheriff’s office.

The on-scene investigation is complete.

On July 28th, 2019 the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call requesting EMS and Law Enforcement in regard to a shooting incident at a residence in the Village of Lake Hallie. Upon Law Enforcements arrival, we discovered two deceased, an adult male and female. Two other adults at the residence suffered gun shot injuries. The two adults were taken to an area hospital and are being treated for their injuries.

At around 2:30 a.m. Chippewa County Deputies went to the residence of one of the deceased in the Town of Lafayette to make contact with family members. Upon entry of the residence Law Enforcement discovered three other gun shot victims, all deceased, of an apparent homicide.

The shooter/gunman is suspected in both homicide investigations. The suspected shooter is also one of the deceased.

At this time residents in the Village of Lake Hallie and Chippewa County are not in harms way. These investigations will be followed up with more details as the investigations continue.

Two people are hurt after a shooting incident in Lake Hallie.

Lake Hallie Police Chief Cal Smokowicz says both police and Chippewa County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence on the 13000 block of 45th Avenue Sunday night, after several 911 calls reported shots had been fired in the area.

When they arrived around 10:20 p.m., they found multiple people with gunshot wounds inside the residence. Two people were taken to a hospital. Their names and conditions have not been released.

Lake Hallie Police requested additional assistance from the City of Chippewa Falls Police and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Police say the incident is under control and there appears to be no further threat to the public.

The situation continues to be investigated by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office and the Lake Hallie Police Department.
