EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Group Health Cooperative in Eau Claire is taking a unique approach to lowering health care costs.
A new program called Destination Medicine gives insured members an opportunity to receive certain operations or procedures at a much lower cost.
The added incentive is that these medical procedures often happen at a destination site.
“People are getting a 4-day weekend off in the Caribbean or out in Mexico at literally world class facilities,” said CEO of Group Health Cooperative, Peter Farrow.
The program is completely voluntary but covered travel is the main incentive.
Farrow says through the program, members are able to share in the savings along with the cooperative.
He says the ultimate goal providing affordable health care
“Our goal is to create pressure on prices here to drive down costs,” said Farrow. “We have to find ways to lower the costs of care in the Chippewa valley.”
