Project Heat's On: Local veterans get heating assistance
For the 15th year in a row, local volunteers are participating in the national Project Heat's On.
Service technicians from UA Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 343 in Central and Western Wisconsin, made stops in Eau Claire and Menomonie Saturday morning to provide help provide heat to local veterans.
Volunteers helped service and repair furnaces, and said they visit about 30 homes on average every year.
“They have such fantastic stories,” said volunteer, Terry Haden. “They’re always so thankful that we’re taking the time to come out and do this for them.”
Volunteers said they consider this a great way to give back to the vets who have served.
“I think it’s great,” said Vietnam veteran, Edward Michaels of Eau Claire. “I don’t have the money. I’m living on social security and working part time. If I could save that furnace for a few more years, I’ll be happy.”
According to organizers of the project, this program helps community members and reduces the cost for government programs.
Organizers say they will be also be starting this project in Marathon County and Wood County this year.
