EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- For the second straight year, WEAU 13 News is partnering with the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation to honor one educator from all 20 public schools in the district with a Golden Apple Award.
South Middle School Principal Diana Zeegers gave South Middle School Math Teacher Cathryn Steidl the good news.
Steidl has been teaching algebra for three decades and has become affectionately known as "Mama Steidl" by her students. She says it's important for her students to know that she has their back when it comes to learning a not so easy subject.
"It's great to build a connection with them, it's so important to have that connection with before you can really teach them math. They need to know that you care and you love them and you are never going to put them down even if they get something wrong, it's going to be a positive experience,” said Steidl.
"Miss Steidl is an amazing educator. She is very dedicated to her craft, if students were standing here, she would say that Miss Steidl is fun. She works hard at developing great relationships not only with her students, but also us as staff,” said Stephanie Rowe, teacher.
Steidl and South Middle School will receive a $1,000 grant from the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation, and Steidl will get to use $500 of the grant to use in her classroom.
