Trailer fire closes down road for 7 hours

The Sparta Area Fire District was dispatched to a reported semi trailer on fire at 10:53 pm last night on I-90 mile post 34 westbound.

When law enforcement arrived they advised that the tractor disconnected from the trailer and the trailer was fully engulfed with fire.The fire also spread to grass on the driving lane shoulder and was close to getting in to a grove of pine trees which Chief Mike Arnold was able to extinguish with the command truck.

The trailer was transporting 40,000 lbs of corn starch from Illinois to Hager City,WI.The trailer and contents were a total loss.I-90 westbound driving lane was closed for 7 hours and the fire district was assisted by the Monroe County Sheriff's Dept.Wisconsin State Patrol,Monroe County Highway Dept.Per Towing,Brian Anderson Excavating,Modern Disposal Service.The cause of the fire is a probable brake malfunction of the right rear wheel on the trailer.The driver was not injured nor was the tractor.
