LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Veterans Memorial Pool broke ground on a new facility this afternoon.
The original pool and pool house, that was built in the early 1900s, closed in 2016.
For the past three years, community members have worked to restore the historic pool near the UW-L campus.
For those involved in the project, they say it was challenging at times but worth it in the end.
"It feels very good. This has been a long process, it's been really moved along by community people and patrons that were loyal to coming to this pool, even when it wasn't heated when it was freezing cold. But it was a great pool in the heart of city that meant a lot to a lot of people," said Veterans Memorial Pool Steering Committee Member Kate Escher.
Veterans Memorial Pool is expected to be back open next June.
