EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Lighter winds across the area today making wind chill less of a factor. Air temperatures are still in the 20's below zero for much of the area. Most of the area will remain sub-zero until late in the morning Friday.
Temperatures near record values this morning in Eau Claire. The current record for January 31 is -33, set in 1899. A few locations in Western Wisconsin saw lows in the 40's below zero, but it looks like the record will stand in Eau Claire. The unofficial low was -30° this morning. After that frigid start, the coldest of the air will begin to slide out to the east, leading to afternoon highs in the single digits below zero. Further improvements will follow, and after one more night below zero, we will be rising back into the single digits and teens on Friday, signalling an end to this frigid and very dangerous cold snap.
Temperatures are forecast to rise above zero Friday with afternoon highs in the teens above. More mild weather for the weekend. Highs will soar well above average. Parts of the region have a shot at hitting the mid 40's on Sunday.
