WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) -- One person died and multiple people were hurt in a massive pileup during whiteout conditions on Interstate 41 in Neenah, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office confirms several people have been transported to area hospitals. An employee from ThedaCare tells Action 2 News that they took 11 patients and were expected to get nine more. Conditions range from fair to good, the employee says.
Other drivers and passengers have been safely removed from their stranded vehicles. They were taken to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Neenah for a warming shelter. The American Red Cross is providing blankets, food and beverages to people impacted by the crash.
"Please continue to avoid the area as the highway remains closed," the Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the southbound lanes would be closed for more than 10 hours as officials work to clear the scene, located near County G. Southbound lanes on highway 41 from highway 10 to 76 will be closed indefinitely. Detours will be from Highway 10 west bound to Highway 45 southbound.
WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) -- Authorities in Winnebago County are at the scene of a multiple-vehicle pileup along I-41 southbound.
The Neenah Police Department has confirmed that at least 20-40+ cars crashed because of treacherous conditions on the interstate. Neenah police said buses were being used to help people get off the interstate and to safety.
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office posted this to their Facebook:
"Due to a multiple vehicle crash, Interstate 41 is shut down from Breezewood Lane in Neenah to Hwy 76 in Oshkosh in both directions. I-41 is shutdown further to the South. Travel conditions are treacherous with white out conditions. Please stay off the roads. 41 southbound is shut down at Hwy 10 and being rerouted to Hwy 76 around the incident."
