LA CROSSE COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- A 24-year-old man is seriously injured after hitting a semi head-on early Thursday morning.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says the crash happened around 2:45 a.m. on I-90 near West Salem. Deputies from the La Crosse County Sheriff's Office were first notified of a wrong-way driver on I-90 near exit 15, driving west in the eastbound lanes. When officers responded, the driver of the car had hit a semi unit towing a load of grain, head-on. The car then went into the median and the semi traveled onto the outside shoulder, through the right side ditch line where it came to rest on a frontage road.
The wrong-way driver was pinned inside the car and had to be removed. He was flown to Gunderson Hospital in La Crosse. Troopers say alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. The operator of the semi said he was sore, but otherwise did not appear to have any significant injuries.
