It could cost you more to heat your home in the coming months if we see an average Wisconsin winter.

According to an Xcel Energy forecast, the increase could be 20%.

Over the five month heating season, Xcel expects customers to spend an average of $545 to heat their home.

Last year that number was in the $400-range.

The company sites a few reasons for the hike:

1. Xcel applied for a rate increase for both natural gas and electric heat systems this year. If approved by the Public Service Commission, the change would take effect in January.

2. Last winter was mild, and because usage was down, monthly bills were the lowest they've been in two decades.
