Eclipse glasses becoming harder to find

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -- Officials warn that while watching the eclipse it is pivotal to have proper eye protection. However, with the eclipse coming up, eclipse glasses are becoming harder and harder to find.

Stores across Lexington are reporting that they are out of eclipse glasses and aren’t sure when they will get more in stock. All Lexington Walmart locations and Lowe’s stores say they don’t have anymore. Neighboring Winchester says they are dealing with the same situation.

Although there is a shortage of glasses, Dr. Russell Van Gelder with the UW/American Academy of Ophthalmology says looking at the event without glasses can cause serious damage to your eyes.

"It's so dangerous for people to look at the sun even for a brief period of time because you can cause permanent damage to the retina. We call it solar retinopathy and it's really very close to burning a hole in the retina,” says Dr. Gelder.

An alternative to using eclipse glasses is to use a number 14 welder’s mask.

Stores say they may not have more glasses in by the time the eclipse happens on August 21st but to check with the store you are wanting to purchase the glasses from.

Glasses can be found at most popular retailers but as we said, glasses are in short supply.
