Road Block For Sparta Ethanol Plant

A planned ethanol operation in Sparta has another hurdle to clear. There's a lawsuit coming from the neighboring business.

Sparta-based Century Foods International filed the lawsuit Monday. It makes nutritional and weight loss supplements. Century Foods claims the ethanol plant's pollution would contaminate the milk-protein-based products it makes. The suit claims the city of Sparta did not follow the correct procedures when it approved subsidies and a zoning permit for the proposed $80 million ethanol plant.

The Sparta city administrator disagrees.

"Basically we came away with the conclusion that the ethanol plant will not affect Century Foods. If we thought in any way we were jeopardizing an existing business, we would not have approved the ethanol plant, but we just don't think that it will," says Ken Witt.

Witt says the suit could delay the May 1st start of construction by a few months.
