Another Meningitis Death-Southeastern Wisconsin Teen

A student at West Allis Central High School is the second teen from Southeastern Wisconsin to die from bacterial meningitis in a month, but a state health official says that does not mean the disease is spreading.

A medical examiner's report says 14-year-old Dante Sawyer tested positive after he died Monday at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. He had been vomiting and complaining of headaches and then collapsed at home before he was taken to the emergency room.

A month ago, 17-year-old Alex Knutter from Kenosha died of meningitis after complaining of a headache and nausea.

With ten cases reported in the state this year, the number is about on track for the average of recent years.

Early symptoms can resemble the flu. Two vaccines are available for immunization against the disease.
