CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) The Chippewa County Board of Supervisors approves a new wheel tax for thousands of eligible vehicles.

It was passed by a vote of 8 to 6 Tuesday night.

County Administrator Frank Pascarella says it's to help cover a deficit in the county's winter maintenance account.

The $10 tax will be added to the registration fee for cars or light trucks.

He says nearly $53,000 vehicles in the county would fall into that category.

The move would generate more than $580,000 for the account each year.

The new wheel tax will go into effect January 1st of 2015.
