STORY FROM 12/11/12
BRIDGE CREEK, Wis. (WEAU) -- Investigators are calling it a tragedy after crews pulled a body from a pond in Eau Claire County.

Sgt. Cory Schalinske says the Eau Claire Co. Sheriff's Department got a call just before 6:45 p.m. Tuesday about a man who may have fallen through the ice at a pond.

The pond is behind a home/farm on Karow Road in the Town of Bridge Creek near Augusta.

Schalinske says an Amish family lives at the home.

The family told deputies one of their family members had gone missing and thought he may have fallen through the ice.

Around 8 p.m., the man's body was recovered by a dive team.

Schalinske says the family told him the man, around his 50's, may have gone out onto the ice to recover a flock of ducks that were on top and had fallen through.

Investigators say it's a tragic reminder to stay off the ice until it is safe.

"Obviously this time of the year, any ice formation cannot be trusted. It takes time for ice to freeze and become solid," says Schalinske.

He says there is no suspicion of foul play.

On scene were the Augusta Police Department, August-Bridge Creek Fire Department, Fall Creek Fire Department, Township Fire and Rescue and Eau Claire Co. Sheriff's Department.

The medical examiner was on scene and will determine the cause of death.

The Sheriff's Department says it will continue to investigate what exactly happened.
