CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) -- A sheriff calls the death of an Eau Claire man who fell 100 feet from the top of a radio tower accidental.

It happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday at a property on 163rd Street in the Town of Eagle Point, which is northeast of Chippewa Falls. Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said James Linstedt, 59, was doing maintenance work on the tower. That's when he fell. Kowalczyk said Linstedt was wearing safety harnesses, but didn't utilize them.

The owner of the property called for help. Kowalczyk said a coroner pronounced Linstedt dead at the scene. The sheriff said Linstedt was a high school classmate of his, and called him a "very intelligent guy." He said the property is owned by former Chippewa County Sheriff Ron Anderson, and that Anderson and Linstedt were ham radio operators.
