JACKSON COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- The DNR is hoping to release elk soon in Jackson County.

According to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, 23 elk are expected to be let out of the gate by September 1. It's part of a 5-year plan to introduce 150 elk to Wisconsin from Kentucky.

There are future plans to send 75 elk to Clam Lake and another 75 to Jackson County.

In April, some elk in quarantine died due to a tick-borne parasite.
