Lab evacuated after chemical spill at Sacred Heart

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – People had to be evacuated from a lab at Sacred Heart Hospital after a chemical spill.

The Eau Claire Fire Department says a 1 liter bottle of chloroform fell and broke in the lab Thursday afternoon. It says the lab was evacuated and the area was ventilated. No one was hurt.

The department says an on-site chemist poured a substance on the chloroform to neutralize its effects. Fire crews are handling general cleanup.

It says only the lab was the only area evacuated.
Statement from Sacred Heart Hospital

This afternoon there was an accidental spill of chloroform in the lab at Sacred Heart Hospital. According to procedure, the colleague quickly contained and controlled the spill. The quantity of spill – one liter – necessitated the notification of Eau Claire Fire Department for hazardous material decontamination. That call was made at 1:36 –immediately after the accidental spill. The fire department team arrived and completed the cleaning procedure.
At no time were patients or visitors in danger. No colleagues were harmed in this incident.
