EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- House Speaker John Boehner said it was just Friday morning when he decided to resign. This comes as some were fighting Boehner's leadership and threatening another government shutdown.

Boehner said fellow house republicans were shocked when he made the announcement to step down at the end of October.

WEAU spoke with local party chairs about the announcement.

"It was a real surprising event, very stunning actually. So I guess we'll have to see what shakes out from here and whether we do better or don't do as well," said Eau Claire County Republican Party Chaire Mike Conlin.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the names of the people who are stepping forward to try to become speaker, and I hope that they try to work across the aisle with the Democrats and in their own caucus just as speaker Boehner has done," said Eau Claire County Democratic Party Chair Beverly Wickstrom.
