NEW INFORMATION: Names released in Chippewa Co. officer-involved shooting

TOWN OF LAFAYETTE, Wis. (Chippewa Co. Sheriff's Dept news release)- On Thursday November 14, 2014 the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department was involved in a joint investigation with the Department of Homeland Security Office out of Milwaukee, WI. The investigation involved 20 year old, Sharrinder Garcha of the United Kingdom who entered into the United States in October of 2014. Mr. Garcha was a person of interest involving a runaway from the State of Florida, who was believed to be in the State of Wisconsin. Information obtained by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department was that Garcha and the juvenile were at a residence in Chippewa County, in the Town of Lafayette. Investigator William Gray was assigned the investigation.

The investigation started Friday morning with Investigator Gray locating Sharrinder Garcha in the Town of Lafayette earlier in the day. The juvenile female was not apprehended at this time. Investigator Gray’s intention was to interview Mr. Garcha, who indicated that he could lead him to the location of a 17 year old run away from the State of Florida. Mr. Garcha was brought to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and was interviewed. After the interview a number of locations were checked on, in the attempt to locate the runaway juvenile.

In the process of gaining information concerning the where a bouts of the juvenile female, Investigator Gray pulled into a parking lot at 16315 CTH J in the Town of Lafayette with Sharrinder Garcha and was awaiting for the area car to assist him, regarding a stop at a residence in Lafayette. While parked in the parking lot at 16315 CTH J, Sharrinder Garcha assaulted Investigator Gray with a knife causing many injuries from the lacerations administered. During the struggle Investigator Gray managed to retrieve his hand gun and shot and killed Sharrinder Garcha.

Currently Investigator Gray is hospitalized at a local Hospital, recovering from the assault. Investigator Gray suffered several cuts to his face, neck and hand during the assault. The injuries at this time are non-life threatening and we expect a full recovery.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department excluded the department from the ongoing investigation and it is being investigated by State of Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigations. Other assistance was obtained from the Department of Homeland Security, Milwaukee Office and the Chippewa Falls Police Department .
