The Associated Press declares Kathleen Vinehout the winner in Senate District 31.

The 31st Senate District covers Buffalo, Trempealeau and Jackson Counties and parts of Dunn, Pierce, Pepin, Eau Claire, Monroe and Clark Counties.

Democrat Kathleen Vinehout, of Alma, was elected to this seat in 2006 and is seeking her second four-year term. Vinehout is a former university professor and health care manager.

Republican Ed Thompson, of Tomah, is the incumbent’s opponent. Thompson is the former Mayor of Tomah and brother of former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson.

Thompson announced in late September he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but that he was continuing with the campaign.
