MADISON, Wis. (WEAU) -- Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature want to make spitting on prosecutors a felony.

It's already a felony for someone to throw or expel bodily substances at emergency medical technicians, first responders, law enforcement officials, firefighters or ambulance operators.

The GOP bill would extend that protection to prosecutors, who currently can only charge people with disorderly conduct for the act.

Democrats say tougher penalties won't stop attacks that are often tied to mental illness.
