Wisconsin Women Beat Kentucky, Advance in WNIT

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team (21-12, 7-9 Big Ten) tied a program record 21 wins and 15 home victories in beating Kentucky 67-61 Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the 2007 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Badgers will play host to Virginia at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Kohl Center. The Cavaliers defeated South Florida 73-71 Thursday in Charlottesville, Va.

The win over the Wildcats gave Wisconsin its 21st victory of the year tying the overall program record for the most victories in a season for the fourth time. The last time UW had 21 wins was when it finished 21-12 in 1999-2000, and won the WNIT. UW’s 15 home victories also the most since a 15-3 record in 1998-99.

Against Kentucky, junior Janese Banks led the team with her fifth career double-double performance which included 16 points and 13 rebounds. Classmate Jolene Anderson tallied a game-high 22 points and Danielle Ward chipped in 10 points while pulling down nine rebounds.

Samantha Mahoney led Kentucky (20-14, 6-8 SEC) with 13 points while Carly Ormerod added 10 scores.
