Alfonso campaigns in Merrill ahead of 7th Congressional District primary
MERRILL, Wis. (WSAW) - President Trump-endorsed Republican Michael Alfonso campaigned in Merrill ahead of the midterm primary, meeting supporters at Rock Island Bar — known locally as “The Rock” — which he called a “Trump Heaven.”
Alfonso, a Republican candidate for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, said he distinguishes himself from what he calls “Trump Conservatives.”
“Trump Conservative means you’re going to support the president in the election year and you’ll forget all about him after that. Trump endorsed means I support the president through and through,” Alfonso said.
Duffy campaigns alongside Alfonso
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, who is also Alfonso’s father-in-law, has been campaigning with Alfonso over the last few days. Alfonso said Duffy’s presence on the trail is meant to vouch for him with voters.
“He just wants to, you know, remind the voters that this guy, this young 26-year-old, he’s got the energy of someone in their 20s, but the values of someone in the 7th District: faith, family, and freedom,” Alfonso said.
Alfonso has also directed criticism at what he calls “RINOs,” or Republicans-in-name-only.
Primary ballot
Also on the Republican side of the ballot are Jessi Ebben, Kevin Hermening, Donald Raihala and Niina Threlfall-Baum.
Democrats running in the primary are Chris Armstrong, Fred Clark and Ginger Murray.
