Locust Lane teaching aid awarded 'Golden Apple'

For the third straight year, WEAU 13 News is partnering with the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation to honor one educator from all 20 public schools in the district with a Golden Apple Award.
Tonight and throughout the month of February, we will recognize those individuals who are making a difference in the lives of our children.
Monday, we start at Locust Lane Elementary School. Principal Laura Schlichting gave the good news to Locust Lane teacher aide Michelle Richards. Her golden apple award voted upon by her peers who say Richards is a huge asset to the entire K-5 staff. As for Michelle, she says she's humbled by the award, adding it's the kids that make coming to work so rewarding.
"I'm fulfilled with having kids come up and hug me and the smiles that they give me every day just makes me feel good and I know that I'm fulfilling something of their needs because they look to me for love and we can offer something; I think is pretty special,” said Richards.
"I just think Michelle lights up a room when she comes in, the kids always look forward to having her here and working with her. I just see her getting so much for working with the kids too. It energizes her and she loves what she does; it's apparent every single day,” said Becca Johnson, teacher.
Michelle and Locust Lane Elementary School will receive a $1,000 grant from the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation, of which Richards will be able to use $500 of that money to use in the classroom.
